Agartala, October 7: India has called for strict, coordinated and decisive international action to combat terrorism, asserting that a collective global effort is essential to eliminate the threat.

Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb participated in the discussions of the Sixth Committee of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and presented India’s national statement. He said India remains firmly committed to a policy of “zero tolerance” towards international terrorism.

Deb stressed the need for effective international action not only against terrorist organisations but also against those who finance terrorism and provide safe havens to terrorists. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has consistently maintained a firm position against terrorism at the international level.

He pointed out that international terrorism cannot be eliminated through the efforts of any single country. It requires a coordinated and decisive initiative by the global community. He emphasised the need to stop terrorist financing, take effective action against terrorist networks and hold those providing safe havens to terrorists accountable.

Deb further said India’s position is clear on the need to build a safe, peaceful and rules-based international order. Member states of the United Nations must work in greater coordination to effectively combat international terrorism and establish peace and security across the world.

He also criticised the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), accusing it of failing to distinguish between victims and perpetrators. India strongly protested the OIC’s objections to the country’s actions against terrorist infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan.

Speaking at the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Tripura MP effectively targeted the OIC over its position. He said terrorist attacks against India have been planned and carried out from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Deb made it clear that India has the right to self-defence to protect its citizens from cross-border terrorism. He also warned that those supporting terrorism would have to face the consequences.

India has been a victim of cross-border terrorism for a long time, he said, adding that terrorism in all its forms, particularly cross-border terrorism, remains one of the most serious threats facing humanity.

He said terrorism has an impact on international peace and security, economic progress, democratic institutions and human rights. There can be no justification for deliberately targeting ordinary civilians, he asserted.

Deb also spoke about the misuse of technology in facilitating terrorist activities.

His intervention at the United Nations, delivered on behalf of India, further underlined the country’s firm position on combating international terrorism and called for stronger international coordination against terrorist networks, their financiers and those providing them safe haven.
