An alleged attack and vandalism at the residence of Congress candidate Partha Saha near the western bank of Jagannath Dighi in Khas Taluk have triggered tension in the area.
According to allegations, a group of unidentified persons wearing masks arrived at Saha’s residence at around 11 pm last night, damaged the boundary fencing of the house and allegedly hurled abuses at his family members. The incident has raised concerns among local residents.
Those alleging the attack claimed that it was intended to intimidate opposition party workers and supporters ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. They further pointed out that the incident took place in Khas Taluk, the constituency of the state’s Finance Minister, raising questions over the security of opposition candidates and the prevailing election atmosphere. However, no evidence has so far emerged establishing any direct involvement of the Finance Minister or anyone close to him in the incident.
Notably, a large police contingent, led by the Superintendent of Police and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, had conducted patrols along various roads in the town yesterday evening. The alleged attack on Saha’s residence took place just a few hours after the security exercise.
Questions have consequently been raised over how such an incident could occur despite the extensive police patrolling. Demands have been made for a fair investigation, identification of those involved and appropriate legal action. However, details regarding the registration of a police case or the progress of any investigation were not immediately available.
